When a line first begins making processors, the % of processors that
will pass all the highspeed tests low, while the % that will pass the
lower speed tests is greater. So they are priced and spec'd so that
the entire run is (hopefully) bought up. If they priced 'em all the
same, there

I have got a 2nd hand HP 8657B RF generator that needs some fixing. I am
searching the service manual which in HP's numbering is 08657-90007. Does
anybody have a PDF copy of it?

When setting the LSB BFO setting the called for frequency in the manual is
4912.7. The lowest I can set mine is 4912.86. All of the other settings on
both CW and SSB can be set to the called for frequency. Do I have a problem?

Hi all,
i would lik evening I reconized a AGC problem on 40m band. My signal
meter shows
S8 to S9 and it sounds like RF-Gain is turned counter clockwise. If
i use ATT to reduce the signal level it does not help. The
signals will drop down but it still sounds like AGC
On double checking the BFO Test (pg 62 of manual) the BFO Low Freq. is too
high. The manual says it should be less than 4912.7 mine is 4912.86. How can I
lower it?

I double checked the counter accuracy with two different counters. It is
correct. If I touch L33 it lowers the BFO frequency to a figure within range.

I'm interested in using solar panels to power the K2 for emergency/field day
operations and am wondering what sort of experience others have had. The
panels seem expensive: about $100 for a 5 watt panel but with battery and a
low power draw of the K2, they look like they can sustain
Douglas,
I purchased a 20 watt Rip Stop Nylon Protected Epoxy Solar Panel from
Connecticut Solar 4 years ago and am very satisfied with them. It will put
out 1200mA which is plenty and more for charging other cells while
operating. Here is the link. They also sell a 10 watt version.

I have had very positive results using a solar panel, Douglas.

This doesn't help any of us now, but http://www.nanosolar.com/ looks
like a company worth keeping an eye on in the coming year or so. Their
products should offer solar energy at lower cost.

Steve,
That is a normal result of an inadequate BFO range - go back to page 62 in
the manual and recheck the range.
BTW, my manual shows that the LSB BFO is to be set at 4913.7 rather than
your stated 4912.7. Keep in mind that this is only an initial setting, you
will want to chage it after you
Hi
I sell the low power solar controller kits.
You can order them from me at
Don Brown

The low power version will handle from 1 to 35 watts and the price is $20 or

This was covered in a post on the reflector a couple days ago - a small
padder capacitor from the junction of X3, X4 and C174 to ground may solve
your BFO low frequency problem. Use 1 or 2 pf and recheck both ends of the
BFO range after adding it.
Normally 4912.86 can be low enough except in

I operate a K1 with a 7ah gel cell and a 5 watt solar panel (about $50
from Harbor Freight) with Don Brown's controller.

When I fired up the K2 today, it was all confused and I had to do a

reset. After the reset I could get no DSP menu so I removed the KDSP and
jumpered the audio lines in order to do the CAL FIL. At that time when I
pressed the AFIL switch I got a not installed message as I should.

After the 4-5-6 reset, be sure you enable the real time clock in the
secondary menu or the K2 won;t be able to talk to the DSP.

I have had all three leading consumer brands of alkaline batteries leak, and
several of the industrial size we use at work. The enemies of all alkaline
cells are heat and moisture, and time.
A number of all types of alkaline cells have reversed polarity in a string

Jeorg,
Yes, I would first look carefully at the AGC section for unsoldered
components and incorrectly placed components. Let the schematic be your
guide in identifying the components involved.
The BC signals can take over the receiver IF and cause strange results. I
recommend that you check

advanced stuff like charge

I would like to wish our country Happy Birthday. We've pushed and prodded
