Hi Don,
I am sorry I should have said:
The K2 with the KPA100 removed behaves normally, current
does not exceed 2.5A on any band at full power (between
10-17 Watts depending on band 40M I get the most power)
I have retuned 80 and 160M and I have checked all the
components for correct value C11,
Andrew,
OK, sorry for the 'dumb' response, but I had to check it out so there
would be no 'tail chasing' in a non-problem area.
Yes, it would seem that the input to the KPA100 is nowhere near 50 ohms
on 160m.
I don't know the vintage of your KPA100, but if it does not have blue

Keith,
I have the same headset/microphone as W2ENY and have very good results with
my K3.
I have used it both with the Kenwood adapter on the front panel as well as
without it on the pack panel. I have made no modifications, er well maybe
one described below. The microphone requires bias selected
This idea has merit, but it is not good for ops with a weak right ear.
Therefore, if implemented, one should be able to select which ear gets the
sound. Oh, to be 25 again.

Um, I just tried it, and, while you could plug it directly to the
back of the K3, your RS-232 connector is now blocked. In addition, both
the K3 and the breakout box have the threaded standoffs that are meant
for the cable holding bolt to go in. You would have to take those off

After reading Don's message about pin 5 and 6 I started to scratch my head
as to whether I made a modification or not to the Kenwood adapter for the

I really can't remember; the microphone is indeed electret. If I did change

Is there any fundamental reason why I can't use VOX control while running

Frank, go ahead and try the internal K3 tuner on different bands. Your 40M

I really am confused as to what idea this is referring to. But I
have a suggestion concerning SPLIT.
SPLIT is a feature that gets used frequently in DX chasing or

Parker,
The K2 VOX does not work well with PSK - by the time the audio is
cranked up enough to trip the VOX reliably, you will be driving the
audio input too hard and the transmitted IMD will suffer. The VOX in
the K2 works OK for voice, but not as well for the more steady audio

Thanks for the quick reply. I expected you would jump on my question! I'll

Just a thought I have always heard the tuner at the feed point of the antenna
defined [SGC] as a coupler. Because it is making a tank circuit at the feed

Chuck, 'coupler' or 'tuner' is simply a matter of semantics, they are
both the same thing. Whether you choose to refer to the remote tuner as
a coupler or not to provide a distinction or not is your choice, but I
do not believe that usage is universal.

With a direct connection from the rig to the ladder line, there may be a

I recently sold an Icom 756 Pro II to make way for my K3. When it
arrives I would like to be able to control the K3 from N1MM and

I misunderstood the previous thread on matched filters.
When I receive the KRX3 after assembling the K3, do I worry about the
stock filters on the K3/100 and KRX3 being mis-matched? Does it matter?
If it doesn't make that much difference for general use, then that's all

I'm having an odd problem with two brand new Top Ten decoders and two
different K3's. In each case, the decoder is having problems pulling up the
band data lines coming in from the K3. All four band data lines measure at
5 volts without the K3 connected (thanks to the decoder's pull-up
resistors)
George, I wouldn't rush out and buy anything just yet. The K3 will
connect via an off the shelf 9 way RS232 serial lead to a PC. The K3 end
needs a male connection.
N1MM will drive the K3 directly from the serial lead for CW keying. I
also have a K1EL Winkey, but find my PC seems to key the K3

Dan,
Did you include a connection to ground (ACC pin 5 or 12)? Behavior like
that indicates that something (like ground) is not properly connected.
Are you certain you counted th eDE-15 pins correctly? If you look
closely, the pin numbers are stamped into the housing plastic insulator.

Jeff,
If and only if you are doing diversity receive, then the mismatched
filters would be noticeable. If they are not far apart, you can 'cheat'
a little on the filter offsets - set both of them the same (to the
average of the two offsets) and you are not likely to notice.

After installing beta v2.57, K3 would not TX in CW mode. After about 15 mins

that the install would mess with settings. Anyway, I turned VOX back on and
