I too have power issues after the latest firmware upgrade. For me the power out
in SSB starts low and after talking for a minute or so rises. On 40M its not
too bad but 20M output is low and stays low. The RX is also affected by the ATU
unit tuning. Very strange behavior. I saw the note that

Reports like that from a number of people have spanned at least half a

I am also using the latest beta (3.04) and don't find the power level on
SSB swings much, it was also OK in that regard with the previous beta
(3.03). The firmware between v2.38, which as fine, to the last two
suffered badly from short duration spikes on SSB, these spikes could be
readily produced
Hi Dave,
No it's not the spike problem.
I think that it is close to the tune then creep up in power issue.
It only seems to be a problem when the KPA3 is selected.
The power output on either a whistle or using the 2 tone oscillator is low on
SSB, and
hitting the key puts the power back up.

Hi,
I also have this problem that SSB power is low following the use of TUNE. I
don't have the built in tuner. I use the tune (hold) function to generate 10W

doing a power cycle after tuning (I now see that there are

Hi K3 owners
On behalf of Mike M0FCG
I'm enquiring if there is a K3 owner living near
Barnsley who could check over Mike's K3?
Apparently, he has reset it and needs to do a power
calibration and update but doesn't have a dummy load or power meter.
I'm 125 miles away so a bit far!
Thankyou

I'm missing or forgetting something rather basic I think. I have my computer
connected to my K3 with a serial cable. I normally use the connection for
DX4WIN but sometimes want to use Digipan for PSK. Of course if I try to use
Digipan while DX4WIN is running, I get a message about the port
You will need to get another COM port. If you have a desktop computer, that is
easy because you can buy a card to go into an expansion slot. Then you would
have COM1 - COM2 - COM3 etc. Now you can also go with a USB to Serial adapter
(Elecraft sells one) and then you can add addition COM

Beta means beta. It is great to hear that as usual you take the user comments
seriously. K3 is the best investment I ever made, sure better than my 401K.

Umm, adding a second serial port won't help if both apps need to talk to
the K3!
Try running LP-Bridge, and connecting the two apps to (different)
virtual serial ports that it uses.
I don't use DX4WIN nor Digipan, but other combinations of apps seem to
work quite well.
Another solution is provided by Eterlogic's Virtual Serial Port Emulator,
a free download from Eterlogic's web site. You can create a serial port
splitter, for using diifferent software programs that talk with the K3.
I use it to run DXBase 2007 and DXLab's Commander program
simultaneously.
Before this thread gets stopped, as it should, my personal experience
was living 1/2 block away from WPEN's transmitter in Philadelphia. I was
amazed to hear WPEN coming out of our stove and toaster. True story.
Shortly thereafter I became KN3SME.

I use an EdgePort with 2 serial ports and can testify to their quality.
Bought this years ago when the cheap versions didn't work very well (at

In contrast, the EdgePort worked right from the start, and the EdgePort

There's a free program called Audacity that will do this. See

You can write your result file as an .mp3 file, which is a fairly compact
format (and loses some amount of quality, depending on the options you
choose).
