I have not looked at 40m as yet, it may be worth a go. Conditions were not
good on 80m this morning so I had to abort as the only stations were weak to
me and a Dutch JOTA station set up half a kc down from us! I will think
about 40m and see what can be done. I only have a trap dipole up but it

Now it is out, what is different between the KPA500 and the Tokyo High
Power range of amplifiers? Auto tuner? That would be great. The KPA500 is
just right for our 400W power limit incidentally - well done there.

Anybody else pretty fed up with the TEST mode being on the MODE button?
The chasing of the PJ's over the past week has really pointed out the
problem in spades.
Any way to defeat the front panel test button or reassign it (like to
the REV button press mode)?

No problem here. I mean, you have to press and hold to get it to go
into the test mode! Too much excitement trying to bust all those
pileups on the PJs? Like shooting fish in a barrel from down here.

Congratulations on your fine motor skills. Just maybe there are a group
of us out there whose skills have significantly degraded over time.
A user defined longer time constant for "PRESS" functions would be a
great help.

Occasionally I accidentally turn a key "press" into a "hold". A user defined
time constant for "hold" would be a nice option for all who want a shorter or
longer "hold" time.

The K3's method of changing bands and modes is pretty balky.

change bands, and the M1, M2, M3 buttons to switch between CW,

failed to contact stations only to discover that I was in TEST mod
Put me down for a "NO". Any TAP/HOLD button is going to be problematic
if you can't remember the difference. Personally, I like where TEST is
located because it's up in the same cluster of basic rig control functions.

Seawater has electrical conductivity of seven *orders* of magnitude
lower than copper!
As a quick and dirty check, I created a simple 10m ground plane
antenna in NEC-4.

firmware. I use Direct imput for my JT65 & PSK modes and want to be able to
leave VOX set for data and PTT for Phone. I really really wish they would
add this. WOuld help avoid accidental keying of the mic when switching

Why? Any competent software - including DigiPan for PSK and WSJT
for JT65 provides for the use of a serial port to generate PTT.

With the RS232 cable to the K3 disconnected, the P3 continues to "sweep"
(display signal as it arrives) while transmitting. The best way to display
SSB is to use averaging and peak modes to show you the spectrum distribution
over time.

Actually, a pretty casual Google search will turn up homebrew designs
using a can of high-concentration salt water as an inexpensive (though
not very stable) dummy load.
And that's pretty much what the salt water "antenna" would be.

Conditions were pretty good on both bands today. Forty meters was loud
with QRM, QRN, and QSB but it was still good enough to dig out a good
number of folks. Twenty meters was strong enough to gain three East Coast
stations. Soon Florida will be available.
