Bob,
Try the menu setting for SPLT SV. It is a per band setting, so you will
have to set it for each band of interest.

Those early instructions were changed with firmware MCU release 2.00 and
above.
Hold any button down while you power on and the K3 will display the
firmware version briefly. If it shows MCU 2.00 or above, run CAL PLL
only on 40 meters.
Below that version, run it on each band.

Does that mean you are using the KX3SER cable instead of the KX3USB?
If you are using the USB cable with the KX3, then the fact that your
laptop has serial ports is not relevant.
Check your port settings.
If using the KX3USB, check the com port that is assigned - look in
device manager.

XP will not see your ftdi usb cable with out the driver. you have to
Download the drive and install it on XP before plugging the cable in
http://www.ftdichip.com/FTDrivers.htm is where you can pull the driver...
install it and then plug in your usb cable and you should be good to go...

Can you get to the CW Filter display (C.1 .60 .80 for example)?
If so, the first number is the center frequency, and the 2nd is the
filter width.
The one with the blinking . is the one that will be changed by the
BAND+ and BAND- buttons.
Set the center frequency for the highest value

Have you tried plugging it into the rear panel Mic connector? - set bias
on and it should work just fine on the K3.
Yes, it will not work with the front panel 8 pin jack without an adapter.

Jim,
Under normal operation, the resolution between an SWR of 1.3 and 1.5 is
not of impo0rtance (pardon those who always strive for an SWR of 1.0).
At HF that amount of resolution is unimportant unless you are doing
measurements on your antenna system (that is different from normal

I use both the W2 and the KAT500. The W2 is closest to the antenna and
tells me what the SWR really is. The KAT500 tells me what the
transmitter is seeing. You really need both.

Buck,
I agree *if* one is interested in the SWR at the antenna side, but most
are only concerned about the SWR that the transceiver or amplifier sees,
and that is at the input to the tuner. Both the KPA500 and the KAT500
indicate the SWR between the PA and the tuner.
Without the KPA500 and
I know this isn't an answer to the basic premise of the raised question,
but let me throw this out.
1. 43 ft. verticals that are ground mounted require a large, good ground
system.
2. Depending on the band you are operating, the assumption of a high
VSWR is correct.
3. High VSWRs on coax are
One can feed the 43 foot vertical with ladder line, and do the tuning in

base of the antenna. Coax is good for an swr of 2.0 or less (depending

Well, as I mentioned, I'm building the 80 watt amp from that QST article, and

desirable. I agree that the difference between a 1.2:1 and 1.4:1 SWR

I strongly object to the word balanced with respect to transmission

Hi Jim !!
I have a ZeroFive 40 meter monoband vertical with 60-12 ft radials on a
radial plate and use only the tuner on my K1. I can easily tune 40 , 20 and

that is 75 ft long. Used this setup in many DX contests with
George,
Let me suggest that move your tuner to the base of the vertical. It
shouldn't make a big difference in tuning, but will cut your losses due
to SWR, particularly on 15.

Mike,
That is normal. Tthe readout on you K3 VFO will not change on trasmit.
Just set VFO-A to the 10.138700 Dial frequency (for 30m) which is
shown in the Dial box of the WSPR program. Do not engage SPLIT or XIT
on your K3.
You didn't ask but one thing you should take care to set up properly
WSPRnet is also a great tool for comparing antennas. I set up some
batch files in Windows to switch my K3's ANT switch every 15 minutes
(during the brief WSPR no-trasmit intervals only!). After a couple
thousand QSOs you can get a pretty good idea how the two antennas
compare, both on receive and
Barry, Number 1 is true if, and only if, the antenna is used below 14 MHz.
It's all a matter of feed point impedance. The higher the impedance, the
less ground dependent the antenna will be for good efficiency. At 1/2
wavelength and above, The ground has limited effect on the antenna
efficiency.
Aaargh. I meant the more ground independent the antenna becomes not less,
above 14 MHz. That is the nature of the ground is less of a concern when the
radiator is at least 1/2 wavelength long.
