[Elecraft] KAT500 VFWD reading in watts

2013-11-03 Thread Goldtr8 (KD8NNU)
Does anyone know how to convert the VFWD readings from the KAT500 software to actual watts out? If I knew this reference calculation then I could eliminate my W2 from the system. I guess I could do lots of measurements to get close but if some knows and can share it would be a lot quicker.

Don, I don't know the exact formula, but I can say that the power is proportional to the voltage squared. If you really want to do that, I would suggest that you set the power to several different levels and compare the square of the VFWD to the power output - see what the common factor is

First thanks to all those that responded to my request to see a KX3 - that was achieved this weekend. I'm looking to setup a light weight SOTA setup. In addition to the KX3, I also saw a mini-buddipole and while it seems to be well manufactured and comes in a nice case it weighs about 2.5lbs,

Hi Gary - I've been using the AlexLoop with my KX3 on SOTA, and it has worked extremely well for me. The only real downside to it is expense, but if you can get past that you should be very happy with it. I usually activate with W5ODS who uses an EARCHI end fed with a 32 foot telescoping pole.

Brian, If the test oscillator crystal is at 10 MHz, it *should* be very attenuated by the 40 meter Low Pass Filter. The K2 40 meter LPF cutoff is in the range of 8.5 MHz, so it cannot be expected to pass a 10 MHz signal. If you have a crystal in the 40 meter band, you could substitute it for
