Do the birdies (mostly) go away when the antenna is disconnected? Could
they be coming from in-house sources?
Are they there when the receiver is operated (on a battery) away from
potential sources?

In the same category as gold-plated speaker wire. (;-0)
Kudos to Elecraft for limiting TX audio to 4 KHZ, regardless of filter
selection.
ESSB is an abomination on the amateur bands!

My K3's second receiver is connected directly to the BNC antenna connector
with a TMP M/F jumper cable I made, and is permanently connected to a 6M
omni antenna. It's (only) used for listening for 6M openings.

Perhaps a coax stub cut for the 49 MHZ frequency and "T'd" off the
connector used by your 6M antenna could provide enough attenuation to
alleviate the problem.

I believe the manual states that it takes a watt or two of power at the
antenna connector to set off the HI-RFI warning. Imagine
a chart of the filter settings. I can tell you how to restore the
proper settings via off-list email.

I've used DX4WIN since it's introduction and it meets my needs. Have

US county tracking it hasn't happened. (:-((

For what seemingly is a relatively small number of FM users, DTMF tones are
easily achieved with a DTMF pad-equipped microphone, and that would seem to
be much better than complicating the already "busy" push-button operation.
I'm probably missing something .

Bill,
The front panel voltage display on a KX3 will -not- be accurate
for the voltage at the input- power connector of the KXPA100.
This voltage must be measured AT THE CONNECTOR on the
rear of the KXPA100 to know what's being delivered to the PA.

Mike,
A normal "12V" battery in a vehicle is almost never at 12V. About 14.4
when the engine is running, and about 13.8 after when not under charge. A
battery measuring "12V" is suspect.
Read the specified input voltage AT THE POWER INPUT connector ... I'll
wager it's lower than what's called f
I'm sure Elecraft has a very valid reason for naming the thing as they
have, but "K-nob" sure seems fitting and appropriate. (-:)
