Arrange a nice, comfortable and WELL-LIT workplace.
Get one of those illuminated magnifiers on a boom and all of the
recommended tools.
Don't do too much at one sitting.
Do NOT keep track of your time. Efficiency is the enemy of craftsmanship.
Think of building as an experience to be savoured,
You might also want to consider a vent fan to exhaust solder fumes from
the area.
I built a home-brew solution with an old muffin fan. You can see the

Thanks to all who responded. Rcvd it today. Solder hot and having fun.
Must be addicted to solder fumes!! 72 Geo/W2BPI

Hi George,
If you've not yet visited http://www.unpcbs.com/, then that would be my

George,
I'm sure others will have additional ideas but for me the most important thing
was to be careful and go slowly. Before you do anything else take a careful
parts inventory.
You may want to consider the purchase of Re-Work Eliminators while they are
still available. You can read all

Hi George,
I just finished my K2 a few weeks ago, it was actually my first kit and came
out working with no problems. The main tips I'd give in retrospect on my
experience mostly from the perspective of a first-time builder:
- start reading the manual now. I.e. download it from the manuals
George,
The best advice I can offer is to 1) follow the instructions in the
manual carefully, 2) Do good soldering, and 3) do not work when you are
tired.
As far as soldering is concerned, you should have a temperature
controlled soldering iron, and do not apply excess solder - I like .015
Tom, N0SS has them on his web
site --I could be wrong)
Good Luck es have fun,

Oops forgot the upgrade to firmware needed for the keying mod, that adds
another $44. The $100 saving is looking poor value!

More than that, consider the rig willl need all firmware chips
depending on options, of course. I'd buy a new key myself
and be done with it. $100 saving is not a $100 savings in
this case.

Thanks for 'all' the very interesting replies, lots of them, I get
pileups like that when I call CQ :-) .
About a 50/50 split for the do it vs don't do it camps though I forgot
to add, until somebody mentioned it here, about the tax. A new kit would
not attract duty but would attract VAT at
Martin,
It is easy to bring that kit up to the current level. You will need
only the Temperature Compensated PLL (thermistor mod) E850138, the
Keying Waveshape change K2KEYMDKT, updated firmware K2FWMCIO and 2
1N4148 diodes to add to that kit and bring it up to the current level.
