Hi all,
Yesterday, the K3 threw up the "Err 12V" error and bypassed the KPA3
module. The circuit breaker didn't pop and I was able to power off and
increase the power back up.
This was happening on PSK with 50W and RTTY with 100W.
I have yet to try digi modes in anger again today without first

Hi
I've got a problem with my K3 #695. Since some weeks, I randomly get

Hello:
I was working the NAQP today on 10M and was doing fine and then the PA got
bypassed and I got ERR 12V on the screen and to check the circuit breaker.
Well the circuit breaker is not popped. Turning the radio on and off did
nothing and I'm forced to run QRP - well, S&P. Changing bands als

Hi Josep, EA6BF;
Was the circuit breaker tripped? If so, push it in to reset.
If not, it is unlikely to be defective, just check for 12V on both wires
at the KPA3.
More likely it is the DC power pins going to the KPA3 100w module are burnt.
This happens on older K3s, before serial # approximate

Check the crimp connections on the spade connections that slip onto
the circuit breaker inside the unit. When I went to check mine the
other day a simple tug on the wire pulled the wire right out of the
connector. Bought some new ones crimped them on well and I've never
had an issue since.

Thanks to all for your replies about the ERR 12V problem.
It seems that is well known by Elecraft. It's related to the wear/corrosion
of the connectors on the KPAIO3, which is a little board used to connect the
KPA3 to the K3 motherboard.
It seems that early K3's used some "tinned" connectors and
Suddenly my K3 #2425 gives me a ERR 12V error every time I turn the power up
to the point that the 100W amp kicks in. What is the likely fault here??

Jamie:
I assume that you are writing about a K3. If it's an "older" K3 you may have
suffered a power connector failure between the K3 and the KPA3 amplifier
module. A mod kit was developed by Elecraft that includes a new connector
with gold plated pins.
You can download the instructions here:

Thanks to everyone for the quick response. The consensus is that it is a
tarnished connector problem - a known issue. My serial number on my K3 is
#616 so definitely an early model. I'll get in touch with them Monday for
the repair kit.
So far, I'm holding my own while QRP J

Indeed, a known issue with early K3s.
I chose to use the easy 'bypass' method.
Pictures and info also available from Elecraft.

Thanks for all the comments. It appears that the most likely culprit are the

Hi Everyone,
I'm still learning how to use my K3 and thanks to the help of everyone on this
list, I've been able to sprinkle in a few RTTY contacts with my CW.
A couple of days ago, I was on RTTY and ran into a problem. I'm pretty sure
(but not 100% certain) I had cranked the power down so it
