Our local club has been asked to present an introduction to ham radio for a
couple of local youth organizations. We are planning a number of hands on
activities and need help with people talking back to the kids. It would be

All you'd have to have is one ground not making contact until you pushed or
checked it. Power ground is an important issue to have exactly right all
the time. You can sometimes eliminate some possible paths with separate
power supplies for some station gear. W4TV has a list of recommendations

Mike,
As Guy suggests, check the ground return between your K2 and the power
supply. Also check the ground path between the computer and the K2.
Make sure all ground paths are intact,

Hi Guy,
Thought I would let you (and the reflector lurkers) know the problem is
solved, but I'm not sure how.
Not a connector issue - I did one of the mods a while back to prevent that.
I did check each of the power leads to the K2, KPA100 etc, but found no
faults. Subsequently measured the cu

Hi Guy,
Thanks
260mA! Guess that would do it.

Do you have the DB9 plug that connects to the back of the KIO2 restricted
to pins 2,3, 5 ONLY? See page 21 in the KIO2 manual. If you have hooked up
a full RS232 to the KIO2 DB9 there is no telling what has gone wrong, you
can cause all kinds of problems.

Hi,
My K2 rig control via a KIO2 stopped. I discovered that RF sub
miniature choke L4, 100 micro Henry, on the main KIO2 board was open
circuit - no evidence of excessive heat etc. L4 is in the RS232 ground
path. Shorting out L4 restored rig control. I replaced L4 with a
larger version (a

Do you have ALC indication with advancing mic gain? IF not, be sure you
have the correct mic jack selected, the correct bias, and Mic hi/lo.
Until you get ALC - whi
hi, Joe and others:
Tks for quick replies, fellas.
Just re-checked things, tx filter is set per manual, still nuthin on SSB.
Tried 2.7 and 2.8 settings.
Next idea, please?

Do you have the SSB transmit filter set to 2.7 or 2.8 KHz?

Help, please.
Fixed this problem once before on another K3, and don't remember how:
After adding accessories, re-loading 4.03, turning things on in config, the
rig will not xmit in SSB. CW xmit is fine.

Grateful thanks for all the replies, both here on the reflector and direct.
I've printed all of them, because they look like a mine of helpful information,
so that's now awaiting my next session in the shack. My XYL's not too well,
so I've been "promoted" to head cook and bottlewasher and it's

I use the SignalLink USB with my K3 and it works like a charm. I use line in,
line out, and PTT from the SignalLink's RJ-45. On the K3, I use a mono jack
into line out, a stereo jack with the "right channel" disconnected into line
in, and a RCA jack to PTT.
I've used this with HRD and
Dave,
You should use the line out connector. The level on this output is not
affected by the AF gain controls, whereas the level on the headphone
output depends on the AF gain controls and also on whether or not you
have headphones plugged into the front panel (since the two are in
parallel).
Dave -
I'm not using an interface. Line-out from the K3 to line-in on the
computer and line-in to the K3 from line-out of the computer. 1/8 inch
stereo cables (tip, ring, sleeve) unmodified. MAIN: MIC+LIN, and vox on. HTH.

David,
While your suggested cable from Line Out will work fine for PSK31, if
you have the SubRX, you will want to use a full stereo cable between
Line Out and the soundcard Line In - it may come in handy to have both
channels available in the future.
You can use the mono cable (as you described
I'm getting round to trying PSK31 and later maybe some other data modes.
I want to use either the stereo line out source or the headphones socket on the
back panel of the K3, which is getting mighty full of connections these days.
I could use some advice from the collective HI!
