Deni,
It wouldn't be right if I didn't chime in a few comments about the
MacIntosh.
One of the wonderful things about the Apple OS X (the "X" is the roman
numeral for 10) Operating system
is it's BSD Unix based. That means any of the linux programs should compile.
Personally, I use a mac min

One thing to consider is how the new computer will communicate with
all those wonderful external things you want/need to control.
Many newer computers, particularly laptops, seem to lack serial ports.
So, if the computer only has USB ports, the devices you want to
use with it will need USB
I have an Eee PC too. In fact, it's what convinced me I could live
with Linux on my other computers.
I didn't buy it specifically for radio use but I played around with it
while waiting for my K3 to arrive. I even started an Asus Eee PC Ham

The days of the single core processor are over.
Developers are writing applications which take advantage of the second

I fancy using the K3 on field days and mini-dxpeditions. I also fancy the
new line of small Asus computers which come with Linux installed. They have
no hard drive therefore run longer on a standard battery. It has a set of
drivers for Windoze applications should I wish to install at a later

Different strokes for different folks. I would avoid USB/COM adapters like
the plague - too many driver problems.
I bought a $10 PCI I/O card (2 serial, 1 parallel port) on ebay and it works
a hell of a lot better than my expensive USB/COM adapter, which after 4
years suddenly exhibits the "spor

with the USB/Serial adapter due to the HW handshake issues, the PC card does a
good job.

At least I can remember that I got a degree, I have no idea what I studied
apart from something to do with Fortran IV and punched cards and a computer
in Manchester and a nice girl from York.

Not that it´s an Elecraft issue but since nobody seems to care.
Yes the Dell Latituden D630 has a serial port, actually the only
Dell laptop I could find with a serial port. I just did buy this
D630 and went through the market, it was just about the only one
with a serial port I could find.

Be careful of the need for serial ports. Very few new laptops have them. The

come with them, but be sure to get one with at least one empty expansion slot
