After 10 years and probably 100,000 CW contest QSOs with my K3, I'm
still learning about things - latest is the CWT function. I find that
keeping it on is totally unobtrusive, but in just a few weeks has
significantly improved the "calibration" of my by-ear tuning. Kudos to
the Elecraft
I'm leaving California after 25 years and going back to Israel in

I dont think SMT is that bad, then again I am young, when I brought
this up to a ham I met at FDIM he told me he is blind in one eye and
has more than 3db on me in age, so there are no excuses, its like mike
fright but with building, just try them sometime. I find smt is easier
to work with than

I hope Elecraft continues to make new kits, not the screw it together type
like the K3, but the kits you build from a big pile of parts.
After all, the surface mount stuff will kill any real kit building before
you know it, and I have built all the Elecraft kits, some twice.

The KX1 was done just as you say, Vic. Elecraft pre-populated the pc board
with the DDS chip and the builder adds the rest.
Y'know a lot of builders find SMDs too small. Shoot, some even find current
1/4 or 1/8 watt leaded resistors too small, and I do sympathize with the
issue of trying the

it's really a wonderful joy to use. I was doing my usual listening on
160 last night and pulling the weak signals out was more of a joy.
There's a lot of controls I have never used before and it will be
awhile before I use them
