It should work fine. I was able to get about 100W out of a Drake L-75.
Just tune the plate and load controls for maximum RF output. (There's
not much point in trying to dip the plate current. Since almost all the
current is resting current, you don't see much of a dip.)

There is a Heathkit forum you could try this question out on. From what I
have been reading, 10-12W is a little low on the power curve for the amp
and getting it tuned up would place some stress on it. When I use it, mine
likes to run at 50-60W input from my K3. Gives me approx 500-600W
You can set your FT-897 to 10W and try it. That is what this person did, and
got 110W out:

One question I have is regarding the possibility of connecting the KX-3 to a
