Found the problem thanks to your suggestions. After a bit of digging
discovered that the X-Fi Go Pro has no stereo mixer. Switched to the
slightly more expensive and much bulkier X-Fi Surround and now works well.

Check to be certain both channels are being sent to the soundcard. The
levels should be the same in both channels. It could be a cable problem
or a soundcard problem that is only presenting one channel to the NaP3
application. Unplug each channel (one at a time) and see if the display
Sounds like clashing drivers or a driver that is incompatible with way you are
operating. I suggest that you contact the maker of your USB/serial adapter and
get an updated driver.
