I have run into an issue with our plug configuration recently in China.
It seems that China now requires the plug blades to have no holes in
them. Referring to the small round opening at the upper area of a US

We have been asked by one of our dealers if our product complies with

Can anyone tell me what this regulation is?

Hello Ed,
The holes in the plug blades are a result of the manufacturing process used to
make the pins. This is referenced in the standard ANSI/NEMA WD 6-1997 on page
17 as a note.

Hello Cindy,
The holes in the plug pins have never been allowed for China. If you look at
the Chinese standard for plugs and receptacles (GB 1002-1996) figure 1 shows
the plug without pin holes.

Hello,
I'm doing some tests of conducted emission using a LISN. My commercial
voltage level is 220 V, 60Hz. But the product i'm testing is 110 V. So,
i'm using a transformer before the LISN this way:
Mains = Transformer(220/110) = LISN = EUT ( Equipment Under Test )
My questions are:

I just looked at a hospital-grade cord, and it had solid, nickel-plated blades
_with_ a hole.
Is the hole related to plug retention in the outlet? I thought I remembered
seeing small bumps on the mating blades inside the wall outlet.

That circuit is OK. All source impedances upstream of the LISN are undefined.
The source power voltage applied to the lISN can be anything as long as it
doesn't exceed the LISN max voltage rating. The LISN, by definition, produces
the standardized source impedance for the EUT.

Hello all,
Yes, the holes are for retention, and UL498 specifies the holes must be
chamfered to prevent them from cutting off the mating bumps in the outlet.
The holes are optional, but plugs have to pass retention tests either way.

You are correct. The small bumps in the contact blades of the wall outlet
are designed to mate with the holes of the
attachment plug blades. My understanding is that holes in the blades and bumps
on the wall outlet contacts are

Dear Moshe,
I assume you mean creepages and clearances between input
circuits and SELV circuits (and not conductors). I am also
assuming you are familiar with the clearance and creepage Tables
in UL1950 and/or EN 60950 which depends on the Installation
Category and Pollution Degree.
