The only question was: what sort of light source? For EMI concerns,
incandescent works best. That¹s all there is to it. No one I know of is
arguing to replace the solar array with some other power source. The power
source is the luminary that illuminates the solar array, and that can and
should

A long time ago, I used to think there were many things that were patently
obvious. As is usually the case, this question has wandered around a bit. At
first, the question was whether a solar panel was really needed; couldn't the
DC power be sourced from a battery or other clean DC

There is a book that was recently published that provides a fine overview of

Absolutely. The solar array interconnect is an antenna for both RE and RS.
The point is that for RE to happen, there has to be fast switching of
current as a load on the array. The array itself into a resistive load is
entirely dc.

Hi Frank,
Welcome to the community.
The IEEE's Product Safety Engineering Society is a great resource -

Ken,
You mentioned "the array wiring can radiate if the current is switched fast
enough", couldn't that also pick noise from other RF sources, as in Radiated
Immunity?
Thanks,
Charlie

Hi Frank,
If you’re reading S2/S8 I’m guessing you’re in the semiconductor manufacturing
equipment SME industry like I am. Welcome. You might want to see if our

Frank, There are more standards than you can ever learn. Most safety
standards are written about the same way (strange, as the same risks/exposures
exist across standards); it is reasonably straightforward to move between
equipment safety standards. The product certification key is to pick
If you will be working on CE marked machinery then review the requirements for
the technical file in the Machinery Directive. Also review requirements in
the Low Voltage Directive whether machinery or not.

But the point is the solar panel is integrated into the test sample and must
be used as the power source. The only issue is what to use to illuminate
the panel. It seems patently obvious to me that an ordinary incandescent
bulb (of sufficient power) is the solution for EMI testing.

The panel in and of itself will not cause emission but the charging current
profile sure can .

I've had a couple of inquiries recently from potential customers who have
said "we want to sell this on Amazon but they are asking for an EMC report?"
so maybe Amazon are (finally) starting to ask the right questions. I've seen
