Nowadays with a newborn daughter I have more time to think than to
code (likely to remain like that for few more weeks), so I did think a

gadget system.
The following might be a good idea:
- Keep the existing shelves and disable end-user exposure to the bryce.
- Use the new gadgets for all desktop gadgets.
