For our library, it is to cut down on human error. Sometimes it happens
because the clerk is not paying attention as they scan for check-in, but I
think it is often a clerk getting distracted before they scan the book and then
laying the book down with the scanned ones by mistake.

The only time I've ever seen this happen that wasn't staff error was when
there were either system problems or internet problems preventing the
checkin from completing, but even then it didn't give a false-positive - in
those cases, it just didn't appear on the grid.

Scanning an item multiple times on the checkin screen should not affect
your checkin statistics. The checkin date only gets saved when an item is
checked in, which closes the circulation. If you scan it again, it doesn't
create a new circulation transaction or rewrite the checkin date.

Galen,
This is a difficult question to answer. I've always assumed that the issue was
a PICNIC issue (problem in chair, not in computer) and gotten on the staff for
not keeping their eyes on the screen while checking items in. But the issue
actually got worse after we migrated to Evergreen, so
To avoid doubling our check in stats, the second scan is done on the Item
Status screen. Any that show as still checked out are handed to a circ clerk
for check in and then go back into the “quality assurance” step for another
scan on the Item Status screen.
This has been pretty effective for

It won’t be changing the checkin scan time of the actual circ transaction
either… not much of anything to worry about.
We do have a bookdrop/sorter now, but back before then checkin/checkout was
always kept separate. On a designated workstation, that while doing checkins,
that was all it
To the best of my knowledge, the only time we do double check-in here is
when items are returned at our children's self-check. The second check-in
by staff is for trapping holds and in-transit items which are otherwise
missed at the self-checks.

What statistics are you worried about doubling?
Unless I'm very much mistaken, the only thing that happens when you check-in an
item that is already checked in is that you update the time/date stamp on the
item. (ie it'd show that user JDoe last scanned the item at such and such date

Hi,
Some of our libraries have moved the checking in of items to a back
workstation and found that resolved the problem. Staff can focus on the
check in and not have the distractions at the front circulation desk.

Hi Galen,
In my experience it is staff not paying attention and items not getting
checked in. I don't believe it is a bug.

Hi,
Out of curiosity (and just to double-check that there isn't a lurking bug),
is the double-checkin process meant to address concerns about library staff
forgetting to check in the items in the first place, or is there something
else going on?

Galen

A couple of our branches check everything in twice. One requires a
different person to do the second check. The only problem with that occurs
when the first person is looking for work to do and isn't allowed to do the
second check in of the cart she checked in earlier in the day.

Kathleen,
I agree, the same person should not do both checkins. Mistakes are more
likely to be caught by a different person.
Thanks,

Hi Melissa,
Several of our libraries do double checkin to prevent this exact problem.
As long as your stats are based on checkout, not checkins, you will not
have a problem.
Thanks,
