Perhaps you are using the improper syntax?
Try typing "'a001 LOGIN SMITH SESAME" where smith is the username and sesame
is the password.
RFC1730 described the additional commands in some detail as well.

You should be able to *view* contacts from Outlook as long as "Use
microsoft rich text format" is checked on the IMAP virtual server
properties. You won't be able to make updates to them or add new ones
however. It will still display as an email folder, but once the items in
it are fully download
There is if you use Ximian Evolution.

IMAP only groks e-mails. Not contacts. I use LDAP to get to the GAL and I
