Do not do file level backups for exchange. The database is a dynamic
open file.
There is a specific Exchange Agent for ArcServeIT allowing for online
backups.
If that is what you are using, let us know what Computer Associates
support says in November or so when they get back to you.

My first guess would be in the metabase. Please note that's just a wild
guess, I don't feel like looking right now[1], and I can't even conceive
of a dire enough disclaimer to tell you to be careful using MetaEdit.
