point the Iphone email app at that URL and provide the user credentials when

In my experience the iPhone reacts very badly to a self-signed certificate.
It also means you may
ertificate is rarely worth the cost saving.
When the only option was Verisign and their $500+ certificates, then it was
worth it, but to save $30?
