What I have done is setup a test lab, using several servers, and 2 PC's and
install / configure the products I wish to learn.
I also do this with help from books for the product, TechNet, online

2 pc's, basic networking, learn a new O/S and a New Exchange Product!

Watch what your admins are doing. Second guess them (not to their face) with
questions to this list. Lots of smart people here and there are usually a
couple of ways to solve problem.
