I have also the same problem and I tried to remove the /sbin/update in inittab
but it didn't solve the problem. I also tried kernels 2.2.5 and 2.2.9.
I have an SBAWE32 which is very similar to SBAWE64. Maybe it cames from that
soundcard. Does anyone has the same problem with another soundcard?
Try checking the permissions on /dev/dsp . I was having problems with
esd and decided to verify the files in the dev package, and found that
most of them were wrong, with some being owned by users that hardly use
the system, for some reason.

Hi!
Wayne Larmon has fixed his troubles with postgresql and thankfully told me
about it. Since this might help others, too, here is his mail:

The "postgresql install is incomplete (missing files in

Thank for your assistance.
As i wrote to mail list, I found "a" solution
using an old boot.img (mandrake-5.2) to boot
and the new CD to install. It works fine.

Is Oracle 8.05 run on Mandrake 6 ?
Oracle had release patch for glib2.1 for RedHat 6 and you need to install
the compatible bin-utils rpm etc .. to make it work.
Did i need to install those compatible-bin-utils on Mandrake 6 too?
Can those rpm work on Mandrake 6 without problem ?
thanks .

Hi!
Under M5.3 i create a file /etc/shutdown.allow to allow only some users
to shutdown my server. But M6 don't use this file... so everyone can
ctrl+alt+del? I can use inittab to trap the ctrl+alt+del..but!

In this case, it should work on Mandrake 6, too - we're almost 100%
compatible with RH 6.

Just to let everyone know...
I downloaded and built the lilo SRPM. It seems that on dual processor
systems that lilo can hang the kernel because it ends up overwriting
some of it's memory space. Lilo therefore needs to be compiled with
the LARGE_EDBA option.
Just thought that this
Hi folks,
Last week I (not only me) reported a fatal error during M6
installation concerning diskdruid/fdisk.
Answer from bero and Tom indicated that the error was due to a
faulty chipset.
As I owned a motherboard with a chipset dated 1997 I thought,
well, times go by and I've to upgrade some.

Thanks - I've put a new lilo in the updates directory.
I have been trying to get the sound to work with e. It works with kde
but I cannot seem to get it going in gnome. I have set /dev/dsp to

not play a sound. I am using a pnp SBAWE64 which works elsewhere.Made

Thanks for the tips..Actually it turned out to be something much more simple
than recompiling the kernel - I didn't realize that BW printing with a color
cartridge sent different commands to the printer than with a BW only
cartridge. Arg! Changing the filter was all I needed to do. Thanks a

I just noticed that Mandrake installs KDE to the same place that Redhat
does (duh!). Putting KDE under /usr (among others) is inconvenient for
me for a variety of reasons, among which are the necessity to resize
partitions, and installing non-mandrake/redhat KDE rpms.
I first thought I'd wait

Have you tried installing M6 with the RH6 boot image? Should work.
Hi Tom,
Just read the new version of your faq5 and tried the RH boot.img.
It worked perfectly!
Superb advice! I'll buy you a drink next month for that one.
Now the installation worked wonderful but I
