i was trying to update my machine from 8.0 to 8.2 but both update and update
packages only fail. it complains about fsck error.
which is weird since 8.0 boots fine.
fsck runs if i don't shutdown properly and fixes whatever shows up without
error.
any thoughts?

am i correct in seeing that you have two harddrives on ide0?
one new, one old?
the new one supports dma while the other does not?
if so, doesn't mixing dma and pio drives on the same channel require the
channel to reduce speed?

i don't suppose that you have a vanilla agp or even a pci card to swap the
radeon out with.
as you mentioned, to me it reeks of video card driver issues.
i have been thinking of buying an 8500 but was holding off until i figured it

my guess is probably slocate or one of the other security related
cron tasks.
mine usually gets totally loaded somewhere between 4 and 6am
both cpus up to 80-90%

the one app that i use which needs serial port access, i had to change the
owner of the port from uucp to my user group.

i don't know what the solution is to what you were experiencing, but i was
having the same problem. my solution was to simply turn the fool thing off.
now everything boots fine
