Defaults for Mandrake are set by the security profile, no?
/etc/security/msec is the place to look.

Yup.
root@ponder: ~ # kgcc --version
egcs-2.91.66
That's what the Mandrake kernel Makefile uses in any case.

Worth noting for anyone who doesn't know that Mandrake stuffs the .config
file for its pr

Your problem is with vmnet which is a kernel module - I would not be at
all surprised

This is by way of helping others not to go through the struggle I went
through on Monday :)
It *can* be done, but it's not exactly intuitive...
First of all, you need the latest VMware (2.0.4) which at least has built
in base support for SMP 2.4.3. It doesn't have a compatible vmnet module

Well, if I do that, I don't even get autorepeat in the Eterm I typed the
command into.
Some time since last night my keyboard repeat has gone...
I'm baffled - I've been running 8.0rc1 since it appeared, and have been up
and logged in for 16 days without problems. Symptoms are, well, no
auto-repeat. If I change keyboard settings in the Gnome config tool and
hit "Try", auto-repeat

So. It appears I possibly need new copies of the hdlist.*.gz files and I
certainly need a means of generating source data from which rpmdrake *can*
build a groups list.

Oddly enough... :)
Current incumbents in this box are an ST38420A, a Maxtor 84320D4 and an
IBM-DTLA-307030. Is there a known problem with Maxtors?
Thanks for your help,
