Can someone point me to an how-to on compiling a new kernel (2.4.13mdk)

Hi all,
I successfully compiled the 2.4.5 kernel and rebooted.
Then I went into xconfig, changed 1 option and went thru the same process.
Now I get ->

It does this for all of my kernels (2.4.3).

Here's an idea...While you've got the computer running start kpm and watch to
see what else is running. You should be able to spot the offending program
draining system resources and put a stop to it. It sounds though like
something is threading out of control.

Hello:
I just installed LM7.2 in my PC, and after the install I wanted to
compile a custom kernel, but something bad happened. After doing 'make

2 minutes it freezes, but there a lot of HD activity. I left the

Hi,
I am a relatively experienced linux user, who is used to compiling custom
kernels using tarballs from ftp.kernal.xx.org. I have installed Mandrake 7.0 to

would prefer to go via the tarball route rather than rpm's, b

Yes ... but they all do high res.

Suse is the one distro that has the real good
high res graphics isnt it?
When I am looking for a new video driver I go to Suse's site,
they always seem to have the latest in video drivers.

I disagree ... let the guy try another distro ... he may or may not come
back to Mandrake, but he'll still be using LINUX!

I started with redhat 6.0 and then moved to 6.1 when it came out last
fall. It was very good. Then I tried Mandrake 6.1 and found it was a lot
of fun playing with kde. Mucked around with debian but found it a little
out of date for my hardware, although my system admin offspring swears
by debian -

of the kernel.
Are there any "recomended" Linux packages out there ie Corel, Slackware
etc??
Thanks again for the input.

Hi,
change the HOSTCFLAGS in /usr/src/linux/Makefile and CFLAGS_NSR/CFLAGS in
/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/Makefile to
-O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -Wall
and avoid using any optimized compiler, use gcc-2.7.2.3 or 2.95.2
if you want a stable kernel.

Have you looked at http://www.kernelnote.org to see the minimal requirements
to compile the 2.2.13 kernel and checked everything on your system against
the list. I would expect that from a new install you should be able to
compile but ???
Also have you installed all of the 6.1 updates yet.
Hi, I have recently installed Linux
Mandrake 6.1 on a K6-2 400Mhz machine, 64Mb Mem and 8Gb Hard drive. All appears
to be working well, it is on a LAN, X works etc. The next thing I need to do is
to recompile the kernel to put in the HAM RADIO AX25
options.
The current kernel is the stock
I believe your boots failed because:
a) you did not rm the module-info symlink, so on boot your new kernel
looked for old module dependencies and
b) your old kernel looked for it's modules, but you'd overwritten them
because your new kernel had the same version string as the old.

I ran into the same problem, a CTRL-C allowed me to continue the boot process
with no apparent difficulties. That does not answer your questions nor mine
but it does allow me to use the system.

I have tried to compile my kernel. I need to disable IDE-ATAPI CD Rom

I finally installed my copy of helios (along with the updates found on
