I would guess one of the adapters is incorrectly negotiating it's speed
and or duplexity. Try hard coding both cards to 10/hdx or 100/fdx and
see if that fixes the problem.

A switch is really nothing more than a bridge anyway. Everyone decided
that bridges are bad, so the marketing folks renamed them and
repositioned them in the market.

This is an extremely poor and technically incorrect explanation, however
I understand what the writer was attempting.
Full duplex is defined as the ability to transmit and receive data
simultaneously. Half duplex is defined as the ability to transmit or to
receive data at any moment at time.

"switched hub" is an oxymoron, IMHO.
