As far as I know apt/synaptic only work for his repository on ibiblio. I just downloaded apt, apt-devel and synaptic via ftp. Ran apt-get update Then you can use either apt-get or synaptic to install packages plus their dependencies. Steer clear of dist-upgrade, it may remove a whole lot more
