I have been using my zip drive with linux since Caldera 1.3 in 1999. All
zips have the fourth partition. I have to reformat the disk if I want an
ext2 (see mini-howto on zip). You can check that by issuing the command
fdisk /dev/sda and then list the partitions.
As for your questions,
is your append devfs mount or devfs nomount in lilo.conf?
I (and last I read the errita for 8.1, so did Mandrake) recommend nomount
if using the kernel that came with the CDs. if you edit lilo.conf, remember
to type lilo as root in a text console, without the quotes to get lilo to
check for

You might like to try adding devfs=nomount to your append line in
