I have long been a fine art printer for other photographers and museums, and
printed on cold heads and condensers for many years (Leitz, Omega, Aristo
etc, five enlarger darkroom for one person), and have read every one of
Ansel Adams and Fred Pickers books and many magazine articles, and am very
I have not had any focus issues with any Nikon scanner (I have three).

Austin,
You assume
CD works for me for now. I shall invest in DVD in the near future. An
opinion on the Giant Hard Drive. What happens when the Giant Crash occurs
and you lose all that information? You really need a backup to the HD.

Compared to what I can get from an enlarger, my Nikon 4000 is a god-send-no
problem with depth of focus problems either.

You seems to be a happy LS4000 user. How do you scan black white negs
(assuming you do)? Nikon clearly stated that you cannot use RGB positive
as the frame gaps are not recognised (I had this issue myself). Do you use
mono settings? If so, how do you clean the negs and/or scans as I
No Bruce, I did NOT assume EVERYONE with a Nikon scanner has a depth of focus
issue...I'd say you did the assuming here. What I know is it IS an issue with that
scanner, apparently more so than with any other scanner.

Austin,

Simon,
For black white I shoot large format so the Nikon 4000 does not come
into play with these negatives. I use an Epson 1650 Photo flatbed scanner +
Vuescan for these.

Tony Terlecki [EMAIL PROTECTED] suggests:
An easy test is to manually focus on a specific part of the film and scan.
That will give you an image critically focused on that point. Then in
NikonScan manually adjust the Manual Focus Adjustment number setting in
increments of +/- 5 then rescan. At
Anybody getting good 120 scans from the Epson 2450?
I can get decent results scanning 4x5 negatives with this scanner, but using
the Vuescan, Silverfast or Epson twain scan program, I get mushy scans with
120 film. I can't print them at any size while a 4x5 scan prints nicely at
12.75x16.15
Robert,
Are you using the same film holder as for your 4x5? The crossways part. I
was inadvertently using the slide holder for about 10 minutes. Yuck!
