Well, one half is. The kernel (Darwin) is a Unix system. But anything you
see - the whole GUI - has nothing to do with Unix. MacOS X has a huge API
with thousands of functions etc., none of which are related to Unix. Finale
uses those extensively.

Well, that assumes that Linux users use Linux because it is cheap.
I would contend that Linux users buy Linux because:
(a) it is open source, and the "owner" can't go out of business and leave
the product as an orphan;
(b) it is open source; and the "many eyes" that see the code catch more bugs;
