Yes -- you can assign the MIDI Thru to an empty Fixed channel that does not
have an instrument associated with it.
Let me know if this helps! If it does, please report it to MM, as the bug is
100% reproducible on my system, but it would be nice to have corroboration.

Glad it helped! Please let MM know, this is a nasty bug and it had me tearing
my hair out for days until I discovered that it was MIDI Thru related.
As for the playback, I've long gotten into the habit of clicking the Stop
button on the playback controls before hitting spacebar,
Aha. My issue is that the stop button is on a different monitor, so I am
unlikely to ingrain that habit. Thanks anyway.
