I'm not exactly sure when, but whenever I start X, Gnome acts like it is
starting using Sawfish, but stops with the background color of the desktop

I've been trying for days to install the gd.pm perl module in Mac OS
X; my understanding of UNIX install procedures is poor, so any
guidance would be very welcome! I used Fink to install all the
prerequisites but when I get to gd-pm I get errors -- see transcript
