You were right on target! I had forgotten to source /sw/bin/init.csh
after
updating to 10.2 (fink still sort of worked because I had manually added
/sw/bin to my path). As to the v-string thing, it's still there, but
doesn't seem
to interfere with anything. The lines it refers to are

When switching to Perl 5.8, did you follow the procedure outlined in

I get the following error message:

The first line about v-string puzzles me, but after that seems to
indicate your PERL5LIB is not set
correctly. PERL5LIB should contain /sw/lib/perl5
Have you run either of /sw/bin/init.csh (or /sw/bin/init.sh if your
shell is bash)?
