Wanted to add my input to this one.
Firstly, I agree tight coupling is not good practice in regards to architecting
an application. However, where event mechanics are concerned, it's impact can
be slightly negated by using weak listeners - which are good practice in
general.
Secondly, I

playPause.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, playPausePressed);
99 % of the time when Event.target is wrong, it is due to it being a
Shape instance instead of the containing MovieClips as wrongly expected.
It's due to authoring time content being added as separate Shape
instances instead of being drawn on the Movieclip itself.
Thanks for answering Henrik. I just figured out a solution. I have to add a
var to record what was clicked, and then compare that against the event's
currentTarget. It seems like an awful hack though. I'm hoping there's
something simpler.

Hi Michael
Did you set the mouseChildren to false? Without Flash open at the second so I
might get one or two minor things wrong here, but if you don't explicitely set
mouseChildren to false, then the child elements within the MovieClip instance
will be the target as the event bubbles.
Henrik,
Setting mouseChildren=false on an InteractiveObject/Sprite is much
easier. The children no longer react to or originate mouse events.

Agreed, it is easier. But the loop always works. I don't use it for
simple cases. The right tool for the right job.
What? mouseChildren=false always works, whether the job is simple or
not. That's what it was designed for!

Yes. While loading a SWF using wmode=transparent, loaderInfo doesn't fire
ProgressEvent.PROGRESS and Event.COMPLETE events for itself inside FireFox.
The solution is using a separate ENTER_FRAME event to check on the loading
state. You can read the bytesLoaded and bytesTotal (they're correctly
