No, and since that does not seem part of the XSL 1.1 spec it is highly
unlikely that it will be implemented. What is the purpose of mirror
floats? Are the two floats the same (meaning same content) or do they
have at least the same exact size?

is there any way to achieve mirror floats (on outer margins of the book)

Ari,
You can achieve this in (at least) 3 ways:
- table construction (what you thought, and what I should do with FOP 0.9x)
- list construction (a 2 level list, in your case)
- a 3 block construction, using negative space-after and keep-with-next:
this 3rd solution is the lightest code, but
thanks Pascal!
think ill stick to 1st table method.

i think i'd use
floats. (or I just realized in XSL-FO i could get away with using a
table with 3 cells... but was wondering if another prefered way)
Thanks for any guidance,

I think this is not a FOP related question, but a xsl-fo thing.
True, I didn't see the xsl-fo w3 list really active and the yahoo
groups forum used to be good, but seems dead, is w3 list the best
place to ask?
Is the text static?
well, it will be dynamic in future, but i just want to get static

We currently produce software documentation with very wide margins and
put the section headings in these margins. This currently requires a
lot of fairly complicated work with tables. I could imagine side-floats
being useful for simplifying this, providing that the side floats

Dear Fop users,
I'm currently thinking about the implementation of side-floats
(fo:float float=start/end) into Fop. It turns out that there is a
choice to make between several design decisions which imply different
behaviors regarding the placement of floats on the page.

Vincent, in considering this, you may wish to also keep in mind: what
do you see as the usage difference between side-floats and the
xsl:region-start and xsl:region-end regions? I mention this, just to
make sure that use cases actually intended for side regions do not move
into side-floats
whether the spec has additional
guidelines.
- would you expect a side-float being split on several pages?
This can be controlled using keeps. So yes, side floats should probably
be broken across pages by default, if such breaks are possible.
- would you expect different layouts, depending
Hello Johannes,
I read this thread and wondered if there is no other way. I don't
like it to interrupt the fo-rendering, doing some stuff and then keep

I don't think that works in Johannes' case since you can't account for
the left/right pages (inside/outside).

I haven't tried but you may be able to emulate side floats using
absolutely positioned block-containers with the latest FOP release.

thanks in advance
