programs, try
adding sth like this to your /etc/ttys files...
comment out the line that starts xdm -nodaemon
and add a similar one to start the XFree86

Try installing gnome2 from the ports collection to make sure you have
everything installed.
Since Gnome2 is a pretty good Window Manager, it should help you out.
