had similar problems... if you dont mind starting your wmanager manually, without using xdm or similar programs, try adding sth like this to your /etc/ttys files... comment out the line that starts xdm -nodaemon and add a similar one to start the XFree86 sth like ttyv8 "/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86"
