I have a freshly installed 5.3-RELEASE system configured and am trying
to add a few packages using the 'pkg_add -r' command, but I get errors
for all packages similar to the following:
Error: FTP Unable to get
ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-5.3-release/Lates
o set WITHOUT_JAVA=yes and
WITHOUT_MOZILLA=yes.
I am wondering, if I were to use pkg_add... what would OO have been
built with. In other words, how do I determine what is built into the
packages I am pulling down... and do I have any choices about these options.
Thanks,

pkg_add(1) can't do that, but the ports makefiles have enough of the
logic that putting that together should be quite practical.

I've noticed that sometimes pkg_add -r finds packases while portupgrade -NP

No, packages for 5.0-release were recently removed due to lack of
space. Some mirrors may still carry them: if you can find such a
mirror then you can use the env variables listed in pkg_add(1) to
point to it.
Alternatively, you can upgrade to a more recent

I am not saying that the package was installed incompletely,
incorrectly, or something else because I don't know which of those

I believe this is the same as the error message I saw originally

I want to change the ftp location that pkg_add goes to when I want to
add a new pkg. I am running 5.3 Release and currently pkg_add looks
in Latest for the pkg. I would like to be able to pick pkgs from the entire
list instead of just Latest section because some apps I want are not
available
Hi,
When I do, say...
pkg_add -r foo
... is foo-version.tar.gz stored anywhere? With ports, the source tarballs
are saved in /usr/ports/distfiles. But I can't find the downloaded packages
anywhere. Can't find mention of this either.
Reason I ask is that I'm going to reinstall a
Sorry to flood this group with so many questions. It's been some time
and I am quite rusty with the administration of FreeBSD.
I just rediscovered pkg_add (because I needed Perl5.8 and 4.11 comes
only with 5.005!). I guessed that the easiest way to install Perl 5.8 is
pkg_add -r perl5.8.
Hello again, List! It has been many months since my last
confession, er, POST. :)
My question. Generally, what is the easiest way to reinstall
XFree86 to a 5.2-RELEASE working system? Is there a separately-
hosted "ports" area, other than "current?" Thanks very much.

Hi - I've just installed 4.8 from scatch. The next thing I wanted to do
was to CVSUP so I ...
cd /usr/ports/net/cvsupit
make install distclean
... that was a bit strange because cvsupit seemed to start automatically
as part of the 'make'. I wasn't watching it happen but I flicked back to
