Michael I would advocate changing platform. Yes a redesign is what you want
to avoid but I think in a way its a good chance to give the website a face
lift.
I would advocate as well switching away from joomla to wordpress. Joomla
even the latest 3.3.x version I am running for a clients website is

Joomla is nice and all dont get me wrong but until you get used to it its a
pain in the rump to work with. If need be i might be able to find a sponsor
for the website whose a really good friend of mine that might be willing to
sponsor the site in terms of hosting.

WordPress is very easy to work with but the real trick is to find (or
create) a theme that will work for FreeCol and it's needs. Most good themes
start getting expensive quickly. I do link the current freecol.org website
though, so something close to that would be great.
