The article in the Apple Knowledge Base (Article ID 106696 ) specifically
states this works on single-volume systems. You indicate that you do have two
partitions on your drive, which is why the X-key boot will not work for you.

I bought a nice new Apple USB keyboard to use with my TIbook 800 when
at home. It just didn't seem to respond properly. I'm a
not-quite-touch-typist (but fairly quick) and I found that some
characters were missed. Particularly the Shift key just didn't half
the time! I persevered for two weeks
