Hello list:
This is my first posting after leaving the list for several years. I have a
Pismo G4 with a nice
60 GB Travelstar HD in the expansion bay, but I'm having trouble telling OS 10
that I want to
eject the HD and install the DVD and vice versa. OS 9 handled this great, but
how do you do
Thanks, Keith:
I don't have a problem ejecting a DVD, but I'm having a problem REMOVING the
module and swapping
out the HD with the DVD drive in Tiger. OS 9 had those nice messages, it is now
safe to remove the
DVD drive. I don't think Tiger has any code to handle the Pismo's external bay.
I
is there somewhere I can startup airport
after my PB is running?
I just leave Airport on all the time (like the cable modem). That way when
you need it, it is there.

Which enclosure did you get, and how do you like it?

I have 2 batteries in my Pismo, a new one and the original one that has
about 1/2 hour charge left on it. Does it matter which battery occupies
which bay for the most efficient use in terms of longevity and charging?
Thanks,

I have a website design customer who wants to host her site with either
Earthlink or Time-Warner (Roadrunner), as she already has accounts with them
both. Does anyone have any hosting experience with either of these?
Thanks,

My new AE base station has a fondness for 1 particular ethernet cable to
connect from the modem to the WAN port. It won't work with any of my other 5
cables, and it took me about 6 hours to figure that out (the other cables
work fine with other computers and my 10/100 switch).

Pismo G4/500 (40GB GNX), and I think the cables are crossover, as I bought
them to connect computers to the switch. The cable that came with the modem
did not work, and I suspect that is a direct connection cable, as it is

I always thought that was what formatting the drive was for. If I were to
sell a drive on ebay I'd format the drive, test it, and ship it.

Good advice. But the article to which the original poster was
referring identified drives that had been formatted but data was
recovered anyway.
Even a low level format with 'zero all data' checked?

I think if it's not a hoax
I think it is for real. I don't remember what an original signed 128k mac
went for, but I seem to rememberit selling for around $30,000.000.

Something is broken. Supply Details.
It is an Airport Extreme base station, running 10.2.3/9.2. Another symptom
is the Pismo can send and receive email fine via Airport regular, and the
computer on the network can receive but not send email to any other domain
other than it's own (rr).

Then something's broken.
I went out to dinner and now everything is working properly! It is funny how
sometimes doing nothing can accomplish what 5 hours of changing settings and
rebooting failed to do. Thanks all,

Is the installation simple or tricky ?
I thought it was relatively simple. The only trick is you need a torx
screwdriver. Over in the USA the IBM Travelstar GNX (5400 rpm) is just $130,
so why go any smaller than 40 MB?

That Pismo can be upgraded to the equivalent of the early Ti Books for $300.
See http://www.powerlogix.com/ Just ordered my upgrade today.
The upgrade is also available on ebay! see

But the Pismo's batteries are Lithium Ion ones, and LiIon batteries don't have
the 'memory effect.'
Does this mean it is not necessary (or not even a good idea) to totally
discharge a new LiIon battery and recharge it (1 cycle) before moving on to
normal usage?

I'm wondering why nobody makes pcmcia video cards anymore. The last one I
could find was the 4MB 1x3D RoadRocket ($40 on ebay). Is there a hardware
limitation or demand limitation on producing upgraded pcmcia video cards?
Thanks,

That's probably because the current shipping laptops have often more
powerful video cards than most desktop
But all laptops have non-upgradeable video cards, so Pismo owners like
myself have no way to get a 16MB video card or better. I just thought the
pcmcia slot might me able to
Not without drivers, it won't. See the Belkin link I posted yesterday.
Excuse my ignorance, but when (if) they release the Mac OS drivers, will it
then work on the Pismo?

I think technically, it was bought by Hitachi who now controls it, and IBM

Is the only difference between the Pismo 400 and 500 in the processor card?
I'm asking because I recently took my Pismo 400 in to Powerlogix for the
G4/500 upgrade. They ran late on the install, because some of the RAM pins
were not functioning properly, so they eventually gave up on it and
There is no way I'll be able to afford the 17
If you can wait 2 years, you will be able to purchase it used (but, mint
condition) for about $1000. And it will be a low end mac.

digital vs. analog is an argument about the source of the sound.
There is another digital vs. analog argument about the best way to record
acoustic instruments. Some will use tape to 'warm' a sound and then proceed
from there digitally. Some will record and mix 100% analog. A modern
recording
I reccomend the MOTU 828 firewire audio interface, which comes bundled with
AudioDesk software, which should be all you need but the microphones. Cost
new: $700.

I just found out that I can't play German bought DVD movies on my home DVD

questions:
1) would my Pismo DVD player (or any other laptop) be able to play

2) would my Pismo be able to play European home
Re. you memory upgrade, you may have 2 x 128MB installed
Thanks for the warning, but it has 1 x 256MB, with one slot open. I'm still

reason I bought the Pismo is to do fanless audio recording, and although I

wondering how much of my old gear I can bring with me. The only requirement
is that it doesn't make a sound. (I almost went for the Cube instead of

Hello, I am a new Pismo 400MHz/256/10 GB/DVD owner ($700) and this is my
first post to this list. I am migrating to the Pismo from a Umax s900 to do
fanless (hopefully) audio reccording via Firewire (MOTU 828) interface. And
I am interested in getting some feedback about Pismo upgrades.
