Does nayone have any experience between these two:
1. Mercury Extreme G4/1.2GHz w/2MB L3 Cache. (I'm not sure the correct
model#)
2. sonnet encore st g4 1200/2m (SG4-1200-2M)
macuser, I thank you for your time.
But you see I got this G4 Powermac as a hand me down.
The two processors I mentioned

I had a Mercury Extreme 1.5GHz in my old Sawtooth, and had absolutely no
problems. I ran a Sonnet G4 upgrade in my old Beige G3

Wrong. I have an MDD, and know for a fact that you cannot put anything
besides drives and video cards from sawtooth/gig-e/d-a machines into
the MDD, the MDD uses DDR RAM, and a completely different CPU.

I absolutely agree with this, plus if you buy a new machine you still have
your old one to sell/donate/pass-on to somebody else. If you replace the
processor, the old one just goes in the bin!
Computer speed is not just about possessor clock speed but also bus speeds,
ram, disk size limits
/extremesettings.html
This would be a great speed gain, provided you can keep the CPU cool.
But this' all hypothetical, since I cannot measure the temperature anyway.

Oh, I forgot - look at the prices and start crying...

Consider: these are *new* CPUs - used ones found on eBay will be cheaper. But
not that much, am I right?

My 400 MHZ G4 scored a 7 on the Uni test so it should take DP. So
what is the max processor I can just drop in. Anything will work as
long as it's a Sawtooth or Gig series? MDD?

Anything that is not from a Sawtooth or Gigabit Ethernet will not work

P.S. Good luck if you decide to go for Dual processors, let us know
how it goes!

I have a G4 Dual 500 1.5Ghz Ram and complete mother board: the power
supply died about 10 day ago; let me know if you are interested ?

Thanks Len and Christopher for your informative replies. :)
I'm either looking at getting a hold of a 500Mhz, whcih doesn't sound
like much improvement, or buying one of these third party processors
as you mentioned. I didn't pass the test for the dual proccesor
capability.

Alrigt. So I got a 450 AGP G4,
what proccessor can I drop in without any modifications?

A 500Mhz G4 would work, as would a 400 (although that would be
pointless imho) and although you state without any mods, its not a
huge task to get a dual 500 to work if yours is a Gigabit Ethernet
model.

The only straight drop ins from Apple that will increase your speed
are a single 500 from a Sawtooth or duals from the Gig ethernet
series. In order to use

I know that 466 and 533 MHz CPUs from Digital Audio work with the 100
Mhz
I know that you cant put a Dual onto a Non-Dual mobo without
modifications - as it needs more power etc. Also, I think all
QuickSilver G4 CPUs were interchangeable between same models (ie QS
2001 could have any 2001 CPU etc.)
