This is your problem. USB keyboards were known to be problematic for
booting B&W. Attach the ADB keyboard and you should be fine using

Ah, that's likely the problem: USB ports aren't standard on a PM G3, so they
are enabled by system extensions AFTER the boot process. :-)

If you boot the PM G3, will the CD you're using mount to the desktop?
Can you start an install from the CD? If yes, the drive is likely in
good working order. Have you tried selecting the CD as the default
startup device in the 'Startup Device' control panel?
And indeed, OS 8.6 should boot

I decided to format the drive and start fresh, as the PowerMac G3 came with the
HD drive and Mac OS 8.6 installed from previous owner. I tried to boot up with
original Mac OS 8.6 disk in DVD drive holding the 'C' key, and it would go
straight to the HD. My guess
