Hi josh,
Well, that is not necessarily true though. I am a dedicated Linux
user, and have tried Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 all
in virtual machines and the truth is that not all run equally well in
a virtual machine. XP requires a lot less resources than does Windows
7 so its not

Hi Jacob,
Well, number one Windows 8 can't upgrade Windows XP. According to the
Microsoft system requirements you must be running Windows Vista or
higher so if you tried upgrading an XP virtual machine with Windows 8
no wonder it failed. :D

Hey Thomas,
I'm pretty sure that switching to a classic desktop theme turns off Aero.
In the past I've always switched to a classic theme because it was
higher contrast and my vision could pick up a bit more. These days I am
in a high contrast theme and don't believe Aero is running.
If you
Hi Ian,
Yes, that is true, but that is missing the point I was making. The
point was that not all Windows versions work equally as well in a
virtual machine. Windows 7 seems to be something of a resource hog,
and uses a whole lot more resources to run than XP on the same system.

Hi Thomas,
I definitely got your point. I just wanted to make sure you knew that
Aero could be disabled as you were blaming it for much of the slowdown
in Vista and Windows 7.
Cheers,

Hi gang,
I am trying to get DOSBox to work on my win7 machine. I started it, but
what I got when it ran was two separate windows, one was called DOSBox and
the other a DOSBox status screen. I couldn't seem to type into either of
those.
I am using jaws 14. The guy who set up the computer has a

an old Dos screen reader to work, but I’d bet against that being easy. Windows

no they are not. just use windows xp and you can play the old dos games.
NVDA works best in a dos box under xp iin the xp commmand command prompt

Hi Al,
Well, to begin with Dosbox isn't screen reader accessible so I wonder
why you are bothering trying to use it in the first place. The last
time I messed around with it I don't remember two windows so can't
help with that aspect of your message, but usually typing exit will
quit the program
Hi Al,
Red Hat is a specific distribution or brand of Linux mainly designed
for large scale businesses and corporate servers and such. Its not
actually all that accessible, or necessarily appropriate for a home
user. Something like Ubuntu 12.04.2 or Vinux 4.0 is more appropriate
for a home user.

Hi Josh,
Agreed. Running XP etc virtually on Linux does work better than the
other way around. I'm not sure why, but it may have to do with Linux
handling hardware resources better than does Windows. I do find many
things do run faster under Linux such as Firefox over their Windows
counterparts,
Hi Al,
First things first. When running Dos programs there is no start
command. Not sure where you got that idea, but if it is a standard
executable just typing the program name will launch it. For example,
if piledriver was in c:\pd49 you would type
c:\pd49\pd49
and the program would run. That's
Hi,
I'll add to Josh's post if you use NVDA to play Dos games in the XP
Command Prompt window disable typed characters with insert+2 in order
to get NVDA to read the Command Prompt correctly. Otherwise it will
spell everything on the screen for some reason.
Cheers!

Hi Zack,
Agreed. Dosemu rocks. I've used it with Orca as well, but with Speakup
it is almost as good as having a real Dos machine since Speakup is a
console screen reader similar to ASAP, and Dosemu does a fairly decent
job of running old Dos programs. If it weren't for Dosemu I wouldn't

Hi Al,
No, I don't use Dosbox. What I use to play games like Wrestling League
Simulator is a program called Dosemu for Linux. Dosemu is an MS Dos
emulator for the Linux operating system that works very well with the
Speakup console screen reader, and is the best way to run old Dos
games without
so is dosemu better than nvda in xp or is it similar?

Hard to say. I have used both, but in the end it is up to the person's

Hi Al,
That's quite understandable. Since that was your only contact with the
Linux OS and it was a couple of decades ago I'm not surprised you
aren't up to speed with what is currently available. Back then
distributions like Ubuntu, Sonar, and Vinux didn't exist. Neither did

Thanks again for the help.
