Um...That's not exactly what the rope does. You don't use it to jump
over the wall. What it is actually for is that it takes you up into
the room above the one you are standing in. This room has a door to
your left and a stone statue on your right. Both are exits into rooms

Just like levers, to pick things up you need to press Enter. That is
indeed a torch you're hearing. When you pick it up it'll be extinguished
for later use. When you want to use it you hit T to light it

There are a number of torches hanging on the walls in various rooms of
the game. If Angela says "It is dark in here" or "I need a light" that
means she has entered a dark room and requires a torch to see items
better. You can easily view the room you are in by using the v
command.
