Yeah, check the permissions of the /mnt/hate after it is mounted, it
may change from what it was

Extended attributes... I needed it for some program to function
("shake" perhaps?).
When I boot off the live CD there is a /dev/hda /dev/cdrom /dev/cdrw
/dev/dvd /dev/dvdrw etc & it works just fine.
When I boot off my kernel there are no such devices & I can't use the drive.
This is the same drive as in my old system, which just worked with no
tweaking before.

Funny, I always thought the 'defaults' in the 4th column was a no-op,
kinda like 'none' in the device column for tmpfs. Seems its got other
implications -
defaults
Use default options: rw, suid, dev, exec, auto, nouser, and async

Should work. Mine is similar:
/dev/mapper/cryptoraid /mnt/raid ext4
defaults,noati
Hi,
what is needed for read/write access on ext4 disk ?
My current fstab entry:
/dev/mapper/hate /mnt/hate ext4 noatime,noexec,nodev,noauto,user 0 0

OK, I think I narrowed down the cause a bit. I am getting this msg
during hal installation, and before it fails:
>>> /etc/conf.d/hald
--- /sbin/
>>> /sbin/umount.hal
--- /lib/
--- /lib/udev/
>>> /lib/udev/hal_unmount
--- /media/
!!! copy
/var/tmp/portage/sys-apps/hal-0.5.11-r8/image/media/.keep

according to the message, hal was installed
