mdadm, lvm in the bin dir,
and /dev populated with null, zero, console, tty, and the
sd* devices you really have on the device. Cpio+gzip it into
something like /boot/rescue.cpio.gz and use it with initrd.

drivers then find a MB with the old hardware they
were designed for and use that instead.
Otherwise you will suffer far less frus

won't put it into a locked up state.

.fvwm[2]rc -- is a worthwhile part of running a
machine.

hardware. In my experience, purely random flakeyness
is more likely to be a hardware issue.
In any case, I'm happily running with fvwm 2.6.3,
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev", and no xorg.conf whatever.
