I did'nt try test2 yet but in test1, PC speaker support is an option and
it's turned off by default. I can't remember where it is exactly but it
was under a misc menu in menuconfig...

Might I suggest nedit (http://www.nedit.org). It does not use GTK nor QT
but OpenMosix.. It's full of features and quick to start.
