I just want to report that I had the same problem, and it was solved by
following the above instructions. Basicaly it's a me too message.
CPU: Athlon XP 1500+
KEYWORKD: x86 (mainly)
CFLAGS: -march=athlon-xp -O2 -pipe

this is possible on other various unixes, and I presume it is

You want to install ssmtp
# emerge net-mail/ssmtp
Then edit /etc/ssmtp/ssmtp.conf to reflect your needs.
