I have got the same problem with my compaq portable evo n1020v.
I dont have a solution and would really like to know what happened.
I also did an emerge -u world and then etc-update.
This seems to a fairly serious problem so I'm hoping that somebody has a
solution.

it is unable to mount
the partition. The only information you get is on the screen.

Just boot from the install cd
mount /dev/hda5 /mnt/gentoo
and check /mnt/gentoo/etc/fstab
If it still panics check that you have support for your partition
compiled into the kernel (reiserfs etc)

It might be better to use a axis network camera.
Some models have motion detection.
Their cameras use linux so maybe you could intergrate their cameras
into your linux
